Exodus Planning and Scheduling

The Google+ sunset was announced 8 October 2018, and will take effect in August 2019, though a precise date has not yet been set.

This is a timeline for planning which you may adapt to your needs.

General considerations[edit]

You and/or your group might choose to move earlier, later, or not at all from Google+. Considerations influencing that choice follow.

Early vs. late moving[edit]

Options are to leave Google+ soon or immediately -- and some people and organisations have and are doing this -- or toward the middle or end of the sunset period. There are considerations for each of these.

If your organisation uses Google+ largely as part of its social-media broadcast strategy but practices little engagement, and you have no significant content unique to Google+, and early exit may be sensible.

If you individually use Google+ among other social platforms but can shift that elsewhere, and again, have no significant or long-term important content on Google+, again, an early move is likely sensible.

On the other hand, if you've been engaging and posting original material to Google+, wish to have your audience and/or content present elsewhere, and need time to plan and coordinate that move, it's likely you'll do better to spend some time in preparation.

Some people have stated an intent to ride out Google+ to the end. This will likely be possible, though it may be lonely in the final weeks and months, and if no plans are made to re-establish a beachhead elsewhere online, last-minute migrations are likely to be incomplete at best. Experience has shown that human relationships are fairly durable even through profound disruptions, though other elements, particularly data, may be lost.

Google have not yet clearly communicated what access to Google+ data will be available after the final public shutdown, though it's highly probable that data will continue to be available through Google Take Out.

Converting to a paid Google+ service[edit]

An enterprise version of Google+ is slated to remain active, though the parameters, longevity, and capabilities of this remain to be seen. You may wish to consider this as a possible option, eliminating much the need for migration. It's likely that this will not offer much by way of public engagement, however.

Phases[edit]

As an initial approach, consider a four-phase process, on roughly the following schedule:

  • Oct 2018 - Dec 2018: Coordination, planning, and exploring alternatives.
  • Jan 2019 - Apr 2019: Execution.
  • May 2019 - Jul 2019: Re-establishing community.
  • Aug 2019 - ∞: Assessment of migration, rebuilding and expanding.

You might take more or less time in any of the phases, but the _final_ deadline will be August 2019. Advance planning and careful assessment should make the process smoother. Avoiding heavy commitments during the holiday season should be useful. You'll be wrapping up most Google+ activity by April-May 2019.

Planning and assessment[edit]

  • Coordinate with your community.
  • Exchange contact information. Keep this updated through the duration of the move.
  • Determine your goals.
  • Determine data migration preferences.
  • Test data export from Google and import to new tool(s).
  • Assess potential new platforms.

Execution[edit]

  • Establish temporary or permanent new service(s) and accounts.
  • Set up initial configuration(s)
  • Select and upload content.
  • Announce and publicise the new location(s).
  • Update any content with obsolete reference, urls, addresses, etc.
  • Phase out remaining Google+ activity.

Re-establishing community[edit]

  • Contact indivudals and groups directly.
  • Set up hashtags or other discoverable indicators.
  • Follow up with missing members.
  • Continue to post forwarding notices at Google+ locations directing members to new location(s).

Assessment[edit]

  • Determine what did or did not go smoothly.
  • Determine what data were or were not migrated, proved useful, and/or require updating.
  • Continue contact attempts.
  • Repair or replace missing data or content.

The following is an example planning calendar you may wish to consider for your personal or group migration.
