There are numerous opportunities presented by the sunsetting of Google+, and the exodus community has significant power if we are willing to wield it.
Sites and protocols will be competing for the community at large and significant members. There's been heated discussion on both Free Software and proprietary platforms as to what features or development are desired by G+ members, and some prospects that these will be delivered on.
Other general opportunities are:
- The development of more open and interoperable protocols.
- The adoption of existing open and interoperable protocols, including RSS and Atom syndication, by existing sites.
- The growth of open and federated networking protocols, and the social networks using them.
- The growth of opportunities for self-hosting networks.
- Individual control over your own content and relationship data.
- Fine-grained, individual control of both the audience a post goes out to (push filtering) and the topics one sees (pull filtering). (Equivalent to circles and collections.)
- Improved data import and export tools.
- An opportunity to campaign for greater data autonomy, data privacy, and hosting privileges on public residential-grade communications services.
- Development addressing capabilities and performance in existing Free Software offerings.
- Improving the ease-of-use, safety-of-use, and viability of self-hosted or self-service social networking.
- The emergence of small and local hosting alternatives -- provisioning for online communities within the context of local physical communities.
And more.
