The Editors' Lounge is a place to discuss PlexodusWiki, including plans, experiences, issues, or just shoot the breeze.

19 October 2018: We've been spammed[edit]

A slew of new-user creations beginning with User:Bayouboy62 at 21:36. 39 in total. I'm learning some spam tools today....

OK, about 40 accounts created, mostly bitcoin and gambling site spamming. I've removed the earlier list here, they're all in the logs.

We've now got some spam protection, hope that works. Checking for other strangeness.

Pull up a chair, pour a $BEVERAGE[edit]

Well, what with the excitement out of the way....

First: thanks to everyone who's showed up to help, it's hugely appreciated and really heartening.

Second: if you've got any thoughts, concerns, questions, whatever, pipe up and speak out. I'm still learning how to drive this thing and trying to decide where I want it to go and how, the situation is evolving. We've made a good start, now for follow-through.

I'd been meaning to say that already, and set up this space, our unexpected visitors provided an opportunity in that regard.

And that's the pep talk for now.

Hey Dred - loving what you're doing with the place[edit]

It is quite a challenge to add to this wiki thing on my phone. But the reading and watching the documentation come to life rocks.

It gets my inner technical writer and intranet admin-self stoked - until something else gets me stoked. I'm easily distracted.

But I have a love for documentation. It's how I got my start in IT.

Loving what I've read about the spam protection product. In my opinion, having something relatively easy and affordable changes my skepticism about self hosting. After the exponentially expanding burden on me as an email admin and the wordpress spam hacks and the Drupal shit of the very later aughts - I was done with self hosting for anything not a paid gig. This product could change that for me. Exciting times.

Thanks. I am so beyond completely dead serious when I say this is a huge opportunity. I'd titled my G+ community "The Beginning is Near" because reasons. Been itching to jump on a small / self / social-hosting wave for a while. I'm hoping it's the right thing to do. I get the feeling it is.

I'm thinking of a style guide[edit]

First item: heading levels. I'd been using == Heading == as top-level, now think that should be bumped up to = Heading =. So we'll (I'll?) need to walk through all pages to fix that.

Some other bits as well probably to be stuck in PlexodusWiki:Style at some point.

25 October 2018: Started on Categories classification[edit]

This is early yet, but it is another of those structural elements that proves useful. Take a look and see if the general shape makes sense.

The MediaWiki Extension CategoryTree extension would be really useful here. User:JollyOrc, can you do any majick on that?

Probably need to go back through the pages and add text (or create a template) that these are automatically-generated pages and should _not_ be edited, and how to add/remove a page from a category.

Data Migration Process and Considerations protected[edit]

Preemptive measure, but of any page that's likely to be used to point people to trouble, this is it.

11 December 2018: August -> April updates[edit]

Given that Google have cut down the sunset period by 4 months, I've gone through and edited all references to an August / Aug sunset to April / Apr. I think I've got them all. If not, please feel free to edit, though note that some references are in fact historically accurate.
